When it comes to winter pastimes, one pursuit that can really get your blood running is ice skating. The Natural History Museum in South Kensington has a public ice rink open until January 12, where you will be able to skate against a backdrop of Alfred Waterhouse's buildings. Alternatively, you could try skating on the dry moat at the Tower of London, which has been converted into a skating rink until January 5. Just the place if you want to have some fun in the midst of London’s history.

The festive season is a time of colour and spectacle, and if you want to make the most of that, then the ‘Wave’ at Eccleston Yards will be one of the more appealing winter events London has to offer. This display, running until January 11, comprises 500 glowing orbs suspended in the air, offering a truly fantastic sight. For something more active, you could take part in the Yule Jog Christmas Lights Running Tour, taking place across various well-lit locations until December 23.​

The winter celebrations don't end with Christmas. When New Year's arrives, visitors to London will have the opportunity to ring in the new decade with the New Year’s Day Parade occurring across various locations in the city. The parade includes more than 8,500 performers -- from dancers and cheerleaders, to marching bands and even Pearly Kings and Queens -- who represent 20 different participating countries.

If you are looking for indoor attractions that excite the mind, perhaps you could visit one of the art exhibitions taking place in London this winter. The National Portrait Gallery's Pre-Raphaelite Sisters exhibition, running until January 26, celebrates the artists Christina Rossetti, Effie Gray Millais and ten other women who brought a new fantasy and romance to the art world. Tate Britain's William Blake: ‘The Artist’ exhibition, which will run until February 2, is focused on the illustrative work of the visionary creator who is best known for his poetry. You could also head to Mayfair to see Royal Academy of Arts's Eco-Visionaries event, running until February 23, which includes a range of art and architecture on the topic of climate change.
